Overview

Broadcom's Wi-Fi 8 Edge AI Access Point platform is the industry's first enterprise Wi-Fi 8 AP solution built around a dedicated accelerated processing unit. The new BCM49438 APU combines high-performance computing, networking and AI acceleration in a single, tightly integrated piece of silicon, enabling genuine edge AI processing inside the access point itself.

Paired with Broadcom's enterprise Wi-Fi 8 radios — the BCM43840, BCM43844 and BCM43820 — the platform lets OEMs build complete APs that deliver real-time optimisation and adaptive intelligence across all frequency bands, rather than treating the AP as a simple bridge to the cloud.

The design targets the infrastructure demands of the AI era: exploding telemetry from connected devices, ultra-low-latency requirements for real-time applications, and the need for local intelligence. It integrates Wireless Time-Sensitive Networking (wTSN) leveraging 1588 Precision Time Protocol for deterministic communication, and feeds deep real-time telemetry into AIOps platforms. Broadcom positions the APU as foundational for next-generation industrial environments and AI-driven manufacturing, with the companion Trident X3+ switch platform completing the wiring-closet story.
