Overview
The ADT R27A-BK3 solves a specific bench problem: how to power up and test an E1.S or E3.S SSD when you do not have an EDSFF-capable chassis. It is a PCIe add-in card that carries an EDSFF drive slot, so the drive appears to the host as a normal NVMe device in a standard slot.
Because E1.S and E3.S share the 1C connector, one card accepts either form factor — a single adapter covers both. The host interface is a PCIe Gen5 x4 edge connector, and a PCIe Gen4 revision also exists, so the version must be confirmed before ordering. The same caution applies to the wider family: U.2 variants are sold under similar part numbers.
The card is physically large because it has to house an E3.S drive, a 4-pin PWM blower fan and the PCIe-to-EDSFF converter board. The fan-equipped version exists specifically because airflow through a bare adapter in a general-purpose PC is not reliable enough to keep an enterprise SSD within its thermal envelope.
Key Benefits
One card covers E1.S and E3.S via the shared 1C connector. PCIe Gen5 x4 so the adapter does not bottleneck a current-generation SSD. Integrated PWM blower to keep enterprise drives inside their thermal envelope outside a server chassis. Roughly USD 60 — a low-cost way to add EDSFF validation capability to an existing workstation.
Applications
Bench validation of E1.S and E3.S enterprise SSDs; firmware and qualification testing outside an EDSFF chassis; low-volume EDSFF storage in workstations; NVMe drive staging and imaging; development platforms that accept PCIe cards but not EDSFF bays; field-service spares for drive diagnostics.
