Overview
The FerriSSD is not a drive in a case - it is a complete SSD soldered onto the board as a 16 x 20 mm BGA. Controller, NAND and passives are already qualified together, which removes connector reliability as a failure mode and lets an embedded design be assembled like any other surface-mount component.
That packaging choice matters most where the host has no room for a 2.5 inch or M.2 drive, or where vibration and shock make a socketed drive the weakest link. The current generation runs PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe with over 6 GB/s read and up to 1 TB of capacity, and the family carries AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive designs.
For SSD manufacturers rather than board designers, Silicon Motion also supplies the SM2508 controller - a 6 nm, eight-channel PCIe Gen 5 part rated at up to 14.5 GB/s read and 2.5 million IOPS while staying below 7 W, with a sub-2 mW PS4 state that suits edge and AI-PC designs.
Key Benefits
Solder-down BGA form factor that removes connector and cable failure modes, AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive and industrial programmes, and transparent NAND migration so the host design survives flash generation changes.
Applications
Automotive infotainment, ADAS and telematics modules, medical equipment, digital signage and kiosks, industrial embedded computers, factory automation controllers, and AI edge devices that need local storage without a drive bay.
