Every edge AI server processes terabytes of camera data, inference logs, and model checkpoints — and every storage failure costs hours of factory downtime. Choosing the right RAID level for your industrial SSDs balances three competing goals: throughput, usable capacity, and fault tolerance. This guide benchmarks four RAID configurations on Samsung PM9D3a 3.84 TB NVMe SSDs — the most common 存储 drive in QSCompute's edge server lineup — and maps each to real edge AI deployment profiles.
| RAID Level | Min Drives | Usable Capacity | Read Speedup | Write Penalty | Fault Tolerance | Rebuild Time (3.84 TB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RAID 0 (Striping) | 2 | 100% | 2–4× (linear) | None | None — any failure = total loss | N/A |
| RAID 1 (Mirroring) | 2 | 50% | Up to 2× (reads) | None | 1 drive failure | ~35 min |
| RAID 5 (Striping + Parity) | 3 | 67–89% (n−1)/n | ~2–3× | 4× write amplification (RMW) | 1 drive failure | ~2.5 hrs |
| RAID 10 (Mirror + Stripe) | 4 | 50% | Up to 4× (reads) | None | 1–2 drives (different mirrors) | ~35 min |
Tested on a Supermicro SYS-211E-FRDN2T edge server with Intel Xeon Silver 4514Y, 64 GB DDR5-5600 ECC, and four Samsung PM9D3a 3.84 TB NVMe SSDs (PCIe 5.0 ×4 each). Software RAID via Linux mdadm 4.3 with XFS filesystem:
| Metric | Single Drive | RAID 0 (4×) | RAID 1 (2×) | RAID 5 (4×) | RAID 10 (4×) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seq Read (MB/s) | 7,100 | 27,800 | 7,050 | 20,900 | 13,850 |
| Seq Write (MB/s) | 5,800 | 22,400 | 5,750 | 4,200 | 11,100 |
| Random Read (K IOPS) | 1,050 | 3,980 | 1,035 | 2,860 | 2,010 |
| Random Write (K IOPS) | 210 | 815 | 208 | 82 | 405 |
| Usable Capacity (TB) | 3.84 | 15.36 | 3.84 | 11.52 | 7.68 |
| Cost per Usable TB | $98 | $98 | $196 | $131 | $196 |
| DWPD (effective) | 1.0 | 1.0 (no redundancy) | 1.0 (mirrored writes) | 0.75 (parity writes) | 1.0 |
| Deployment Profile | Cameras | Write Rate | Recommended RAID | Drives | BOM Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-camera AOI (non-critical) | 1–2 | ~80 MB/s | RAID 0 (2× 1.92 TB) | 2× PM9D3a 1.92T | $310 |
| Dual-camera QC (critical line) | 2–4 | ~200 MB/s | RAID 1 (2× 3.84 TB) | 2× PM9D3a 3.84T | $750 |
| Multi-camera AOI (8 cams) | 8 | ~600 MB/s | RAID 5 (4× 3.84 TB) | 4× PM9D3a 3.84T | $1,500 |
| 16-camera QC + model training | 16 | ~1.2 GB/s | RAID 10 (4× 3.84 TB) | 4× PM9D3a 3.84T | $1,500 |
RAID 5 write penalty matters at scale. The 4× write amplification (read-modify-write cycle) drops random write IOPS from 210K to 82K on a 4-drive array. For multi-camera AOI where every frame is written for audit, RAID 10 is worth the 50% capacity hit — it delivers 405K random write IOPS with zero parity overhead.
Rebuild time = vulnerability window. A RAID 5 rebuild on a 3.84 TB drive takes ~2.5 hours — during which a second drive failure causes total data loss. RAID 1 and RAID 10 rebuild in ~35 minutes because they only need to copy data, not compute parity. For 24/7 factory lines where downtime costs $5,000–$50,000/hour, the faster rebuild of RAID 10 justifies the extra drive cost.
NVMe hot-swap is real in 2026. U.2 and E1.S form factors support surprise removal with PCIe hot-plug on Linux kernel 6.6+. This means RAID 1 and RAID 10 arrays on edge servers can be serviced without powering down the factory line. Always specify U.2 or E1.S — not M.2 — if field-replaceable storage is a requirement.
