Picking the right 工业SSD isn't just about sequential read speeds and DWPD ratings — the physical form factor dictates thermal behavior, connector durability, and how many drives fit in a fanless enclosure. Edge AI nodes increasingly demand hot-swap capability, power-loss protection, and high capacity in constrained spaces. This guide compares the five industrial SSD form factors that matter in 2026.
| Form Factor | Interface | Max Capacity (Industrial) | Typical DWPD | Hot-Swap | Wide-Temp Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M.2 2280 | PCIe Gen4 x4 / SATA | 4 TB | 1–3 | No | -40°C to +85°C |
| M.2 22110 | PCIe Gen4 x4 | 8 TB | 1–3 | No | -40°C to +85°C |
| U.2 (2.5" 15mm) | PCIe Gen4 x4 | 15.36 TB | 1–3 | Yes | -40°C to +85°C |
| U.3 (tri-mode) | PCIe Gen4 / SAS / SATA | 30.72 TB | 1–3 | Yes | -40°C to +85°C |
| E1.S (EDSFF) | PCIe Gen5 x4 | 7.68 TB | 1–3 | Yes | -40°C to +85°C |
| 2.5" SATA | SATA 6 Gbps | 7.68 TB | 1–3 | Depends on enclosure | -40°C to +85°C |
M.2 2280 dominates embedded and compact edge AI nodes. Its 22mm × 80mm footprint fits directly onto Jetson carrier boards, industrial SBCs, and fanless panel PCs. Samsung PM9A3 (industrial variant) and SK hynix PE8010 both deliver PCIe Gen4 bandwidth in this form factor.
Best for: Jetson Orin Nano/NX carrier boards, embedded vision systems, single-purpose inference nodes where space is at a premium.
Watch out: M.2 drives dissipate heat directly onto the PCB. In a sealed, fanless IPC at 70°C ambient, thermal throttling can cut throughput by 40% within 15 minutes of sustained writes. A thermal pad to the chassis is non-negotiable.
The 22110 variant (22mm × 110mm) adds 30mm of PCB real estate — enough for double-sided NAND packages that push capacity to 8 TB while maintaining single-sided thermal loads. This form factor appears in industrial motherboards from Advantech and Avalue that specifically accommodate the longer footprint.
Best for: High-capacity embedded storage in IPC motherboards with 22110 slots. Good middle ground when M.2 2280 capacity caps out.
U.2 brings enterprise storage density to the edge. A single U.2 drive at 15.36 TB replaces four 4 TB M.2 drives — critical for edge AI servers running multi-camera video retention or model checkpoint archives. The 2.5" 15mm enclosure includes an integrated heatsink, making U.2 far more thermally resilient than bare M.2 boards.
Best for: Multi-GPU edge servers, NVR systems with 30-day retention policies, factory-floor data lakes that can't rely on cloud backhaul.
Cabling note: U.2 requires an SFF-8639 connector — not the same as SATA despite the similar 2.5" chassis. Check your backplane or use an M.2-to-U.2 adapter cable.
EDSFF E1.S is the emerging standard for hyperscale and is trickling into industrial. Gen5 x4 bandwidth (14 GB/s), hot-swap from the front of a 1U chassis, and standardized power/thermal envelopes make it ideal for dense edge compute sleds. Samsung PM9D3a and Micron 7500 series now ship in E1.S.
Best for: Forward-looking edge AI infrastructure, telco edge (ORAN DU/CU), and any deployment where you want to decouple storage from compute for serviceability.
Caveat: E1.S carrier hardware is still niche outside hyperscale vendors. Industrial chassis support is growing but not ubiquitous yet.
| Deployment Scenario | Recommended Form Factor | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single Jetson Orin node, 1 camera | M.2 2280, 1–2 TB | On-board, zero cabling, lowest cost |
| Fanless IPC, 4–8 cameras, 30-day retention | M.2 22110, 4–8 TB | High capacity in compact footprint with single-sided thermal |
| Edge AI server, 16+ cameras, GPU cluster | U.2, 7.68–15.36 TB × 2–4 drives | Hot-swap, integrated heatsink, enterprise endurance |
| Telco edge / 5G MEC node | E1.S, 3.84–7.68 TB | Front-serviceable, Gen5 bandwidth, NEBS-ready thermal |
| Legacy industrial PLC data logger | 2.5" SATA, 1–2 TB | Broadest compatibility, lowest BOM cost |
