Open any 2026 NVMe price list and you will find "DRAM-less" on most value drives — from $40 client SSDs to M.2 2230 industrial lines. Instead of a dedicated DRAM chip to hold the flash translation layer (FTL), these drives borrow 32–128 MB of host memory through the PCIe Host Memory Buffer (HMB) feature. The design saves $2–6 of BOM, about 0.5–1.5 W of power and enough board space to matter in 2230/2242 formats. For an edge-AI system the question is not whether DRAM-less drives are "bad" — it is whether the specific workload you run (model loading, video ingest, vector search, logging) can tolerate where they compromise.
When an NVMe drive has no onboard DRAM, the controller asks the host to allocate a region of system RAM as its metadata cache (the NVMe spec's HMB feature, enabled with Set Features). Because PCIe Gen4/Gen5 reads from host memory at multi-GB/s, the mapping-table lookups that would otherwise stall the controller become fast — as long as the host grants a large-enough buffer and does not put the link to sleep. The catch: HMB performance depends on the host platform, BIOS settings and power state, not just the drive. And with no DRAM and no power-loss protection, anything held in the host-memory cache is gone on an unclean shutdown.
| Controller | Generation | Sequential (approx.) | DRAM/HMB | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phison PS5021-E21T | Gen4 | ~5,000 MB/s | HMB only | Mainstream 2230/2280, many industrial M.2 lines |
| Phison PS5027-E27T | Gen4 | ~7,400 MB/s | HMB only | High-end DRAM-less consumer/value enterprise |
| Silicon Motion SM2269XT | Gen4 | ~5,300 MB/s | HMB only | WD Blue SN5000-class drives |
| Silicon Motion SM2263XT | Gen3 | ~2,400 MB/s | HMB only | Budget Gen3 M.2, older industrial SKUs |
| Maxio MAP1602A | Gen4 | ~7,000 MB/s | HMB only | High-capacity value drives (2–8 TB) |
| Phison E18 / SMI SM2264 / enterprise | Gen4 | 7,000+ MB/s | Onboard DRAM | Performance & industrial tiers with PLP |
| Workload | DRAM-less OK? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| OS + model/weights store (sequential) | ✅ Yes | Boot and model-load are sequential; any decent drive works |
| Video/NVR ring buffer & logging | ✅ Yes | Write-streaming; watch endurance and add PLP for power cuts |
| Vector DB / SQL at the edge | ⚠️ Depends | QD1-heavy; prefer DRAM or high-end HMB with large buffer |
| Real-time inference with mixed I/O | ⚠️ Test p99 | Measure tail latency under your concurrency, not marketing IOPS |
| Hardware-RAID / HBA attached | ❌ Verify first | HMB passthrough is controller-dependent; test before fleet buy |
| Unattended wide-temp production | ❌ Prefer industrial | Need PLP + wide-temp components + documented TBW |
