Smart city AI deployments have a unique hardware profile: outdoor pole-mounted enclosures, −20°C to 65°C ambient, 24/7 uptime, and no air conditioning. ARM边缘 gateways are the natural fit — sub-25 W power draw, wide-temperature tolerance, and enough AI throughput for the three core workloads: traffic analytics, environmental monitoring, and public safety anomaly detection. But which ARM gateway for which workload?
We evaluated four ARM edge gateways — Jetson Orin NX 16 GB (100 TOPS), Qualcomm QCS8550 (48 TOPS), Rockchip RK3588 (6 TOPS), and MediaTek Genio 1200 (4.8 TOPS) — on real smart city inference pipelines. Here's the hardware landscape and workload-by-workload guidance.

Deployment: 2–4 IP cameras (RTSP, 1080p/4MP) per intersection, running YOLOv8x vehicle detection + classification (car/bus/truck/motorcycle) + license plate OCR on a single gateway. Key metric: throughput in FPS per camera at ≤50 ms end-to-end latency.
| Metric | Jetson Orin NX | QCS8550 | RK3588 | Genio 1200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YOLOv8x (INT8) FPS per stream | 71 FPS | 48 FPS | 17 FPS | 12 FPS |
| Max cameras @ 15 FPS | 4 cameras | 3 cameras | 1 camera | 1 camera |
| License plate OCR (PaddleOCR) ms/image | 3.8 ms | 7.1 ms | 18.4 ms | 24.6 ms |
| End-to-end latency (YOLO + OCR + track) | 22.4 ms | 34.1 ms | 62.7 ms | 81.2 ms |
| System power (4 cameras active) | 19.8 W | 14.2 W | 11.7 W | 8.3 W |
Best for traffic analytics: Jetson Orin NX. A single Orin NX handles 4 simultaneous 1080p traffic cameras with vehicle detection, classification and license plate OCR — all at 22.4 ms. The QCS8550 is close behind with 3 cameras, and its integrated 5G modem eliminates a separate cellular module. For single-camera rural intersections on solar power, the RK3588 is the cost-effective choice at $189.
Deployment: Gateway ingests PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, NO₂, temperature, humidity, and noise sensors (Modbus RTU / RS-485) every 30 seconds, runs a lightweight autoencoder or LSTM for anomaly detection, and streams aggregated data to the cloud dashboard via MQTT.
| Metric | Jetson Orin NX | QCS8550 | RK3588 | Genio 1200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LSTM anomaly inference (INT8, ms) | 1.2 ms | 2.3 ms | 4.1 ms | 5.8 ms |
| Max sensor channels handled | 128+ sensors | 64 sensors | 32 sensors | 16 sensors |
| MQTT throughput (msg/s) | 800+ msg/s | 520 msg/s | 210 msg/s | 140 msg/s |
| Idle power (no cameras) | 7.1 W | 4.8 W | 3.2 W | 2.4 W |
| Solar viability (with 50W panel) | Marginal | Yes | Yes — 3-day autonomy | Yes — 5-day autonomy |
Best for environmental monitoring: Genio 1200 or RK3588. Environmental anomaly detection is a lightweight compute task — even the Genio 1200's 4.8 TOPS handles LSTM inference for 16 sensor channels in 5.8 ms. The deciding factor is power and cost, not AI throughput. For solar-powered deployments, the Genio 1200 at 2.4 W idle with 5-day autonomy on a 50 W panel is the winner. For 32+ sensors with headroom for future camera integration, the RK3588 at 3.2 W is the sweet spot.
Deployment: 1–2 cameras per gateway, running YOLOv8 for person detection and a lightweight anomaly classifier (fight detection, loitering, unattended baggage). Key metric: 15 FPS sustained at ≤100 ms total pipeline latency.
| Metric | Jetson Orin NX | QCS8550 | RK3588 | Genio 1200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YOLOv8n person detection (FPS) | 238 FPS | 147 FPS | 68 FPS | 42 FPS |
| Anomaly classifier (3D-CNN, ms) | 6.2 ms | 12.8 ms | 22.4 ms | 35.6 ms |
| Total pipeline latency (detect + classify) | 15.8 ms | 28.3 ms | 48.7 ms | 72.1 ms |
| Max cameras at 15 FPS | 4 cameras | 4 cameras | 2 cameras | 1 camera |
| Privacy compliance (on-device only) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Best for public safety: QCS8550. The QCS8550 edges out Jetson Orin NX for public safety because its 6× MIPI-CSI lanes and integrated 5G modem create fewer external components in a pole-mounted enclosure. Both handle 4 cameras at 15 FPS with anomaly classification. The QCS8550's integrated 5G reduces total enclosure size and eliminates a USB-to-M.2 adapter, which matters when every cubic centimeter of a NEMA enclosure is budgeted. For single-camera deployments (parking lots, alleyways), the RK3588 is fully capable at $189.
| Deployment Scenario | Recommended Gateway | Key Reason | System Cost (Gateway + Enclosure + Modem) |
